The orthographic accent(or tilde) is the writing of the phonetic accent, understanding the latter as the greater intensity or force with which the syllable of a word is pronounced. For example: camión, átree, mácinchona.

The orthographic accent is graphed with a small line slanted to the right that is placed above that vowel that is part of the stressed syllable, that is, the one that sounds louder than the rest.

The diacritical accent

It is used in those words that, although they are pronounced the same, have different meanings. So, the function that this accent fulfills is precisely to allow them to be differentiated. These accents are placed even when the conventional spelling rules do not provide so.

For example: know and se / him and him.

Types of words according to their stress

  • Sharp words. The stressed syllable is the last. In this case, the words will have a spelling accent when they end in the letters “n”, “s” or, in a vowel. For example, the word "truck" is acute and since it ends in "n" it has an accent, while "clock", which is also acute, is not accentuated because its last letter is "j".
  • Serious words. The stressed syllable is the second, if it is counted from front to back, or in the penultimate, if it is counted from back to front. As opposed to acute words, bass words are accented when they do not end in "n", "s" or a vowel. For example: the word “agile” is serious and has an accent because it ends with a letter that is neither “n” nor “s” nor is it a vowel. Now, the word "house" also has its stressed syllable located in the second to last place but, as it ends with a vowel, the accent is not graphed.
  • Words esdrújulas. Its stressed syllable is the third if it is counted backwards. As a rule, these words always carry an accent. For example, the word "canticle" sounds strong in the third syllable if it is counted backwards, so it will necessarily have an accent, no matter what letter it ends with.
  • Words sobreesdrújulas: The stressed syllable is located before the penultimate syllable. In general, these types of words carry an accent. For example: telling them. The exception is when it is an adverb formed from an adjective and that has the suffix –mente. In this case, it will only have an accent if the adjective has. For example, the term "easy" does have an accent therefore, if we write "easily", we must put a tick. Now, if we write the word "slowly", it will not have a spelling accent due to the word slow, nor will it.
