In the Spanish language, words can be classified according to the location of their stressed syllable, that is, the one in which the greatest emphasis of the pronunciation of the word falls. According to this criterion, there are three types of words:

  • Sharp words. The stressed syllable is the last. For example: Salt-to, yeah-llón.
  • Serious words. The stressed syllable is the penultimate. For example:yes-lla, laugh-or.
  • Esdrújulas words. The stressed syllable is any syllable before the last one. For example: EC-lu-la.

When do they have an accent?

  • Sharp words. They carry an accent whenever they end in vowel letters, in N or in S; and also in specific cases of rupture of a diphthong (hiatus).
  • Serious words. Unlike the acute ones, they do not have an accent when they end in a vowel, N or S. The exception to the rule, again, occurs in the case of hiatuses, in which the serious words ending in a vowel have an accent.
  • Esdrújulas words. They always carry the accent in their stressed syllable.
