Sometimes the name given to abstract nouns is 'those that cannot be touched' or 'that are not perceived through the senses'. Characterizing it this way is quite imprecise, since there are concrete nouns that cannot be perceived with the senses either (possibly chemical elements or very small particles) but they are not abstract since they have a real existence.
Rather, the condition of abstract is given by existence (beyond being a noun) always in reference to something that possesses it, usually a person or a circumstance: love does not exist if there is no one who loves. Instead, concrete nouns are materials, they exist independently of something that contains them: a table or a country can be thought without the need for something to complement them.
