The parallelism it is a literary figure that consists of the reiteration of the same structure to achieve a rhythmic or poetic effect. For example: How I wish I could live without air. / I wish I could live without you.

The repeated structure can be a word, a phrase, an expression, or just a way of ordering a sentence. The goal is to produce a rhythmic effect and to embellish a style. It is a resource widely used in songs, verses and poetry.

Types of parallelism

According to the relationship between the repeated structures:

• Parison. Also called syntactic parallelism, it occurs when two sequences coincide almost identically in their syntax, that is, in their structure.
• Correlation. It is a form of parallelism in which identical or very similar elements appear in two moments of the same sentence or the same sequence operating in a mirror, that is, symmetrically.
• Isocolon. It consists of the similarity in the length of the syllables between the reiterated terms, but applied to prose. It is similar to the isosyllabism of poetry (the repetition of the number of syllables in verses).
• Semantic. It consists of the reiteration of meanings returning to an idea already said but with other words, sustaining a rhythmic or meaning recurrence.

According to the meaning it gives to the text:

• Synonymic. The repeated content responds to the same or a very similar meaning.
• Antithetical. The repetition gives rise to a content similar in form but opposite in meaning.
• Synthetic. The reiteration allows to introduce new meanings or new ideas, starting from a similar formal structure.
