Conjunctions are words that allow parts of a sentence or different sentences to be joined together. In English, "conjunctions" are called coordinated conjunctions and "subjunctions" are subordinate conjunctions.
"Whereas" is a subordinate conjunction (subjunction). Its function is to point out a contrast or contradiction. It can be translated as "while”. However, it should not be confused with the temporal sense (While).
