Types of synonyms
- Total synonyms. The words are interchangeable, meaning that one can replace the other in the sentence, regardless of the concept. Since each word usually has several meanings, full synonymy is rare. For example: auto car.
- Partial or contextual synonyms. Words are synonyms in only one of the senses they have, so they will only be interchangeable in a specific context. For example: warm / hot.
- Referential synonyms. The words refer to the same referent, but they do not mean the same thing. This happens for example with hyponyms and hyperonyms. For example: lemonade / drink.
- Synonymy of connotation. Although literally the words do not mean the same thing, they connote the same thing in some of their meanings. For example: You are the Maradona of business. In this case, "Maradona" works as a synonym for "genius."

Video explanation
We made a video to explain it to you easily:
Synonyms are useful when writing a text to avoid repeating the same word without missing the meaning of what you want to convey.
Also, in cases where there is a slight difference in meaning, they allow choosing the most appropriate word to convey an idea.
Types of antonyms
- Gradual antonyms. These words refer to the same thing, but to a different degree. For example: large / medium.
- Complementary antonyms: Two words completely contradict each other. For example: Live dead. Many complementary antonyms are made up of negative prefixes. For example: formal / informal, natural / unnatural.
- Reciprocal antonyms: Two words that are related to each other by a concept in which both participate. For example: teach learn.
