The triphthong It is the succession of three vowels in the same syllable: closed vowel (u / i) + stressed open vowel (a / e / o) + closed vowel (u / i). For example: limpiauñas, actuis.

Almost all words with tripthong correspond to verb conjugations in the second person plural (you). For example: you contagiéis. It is a typical conjugation of Spain, which in Latin America is replaced by ‘you’, with the verb pronounced in the same way as the third person plural. In the same example: you infect.

When the 'y' (and Greek) is pronounced as 'i', it fulfills the function of a vowel and can form tripthong. For example: Paraguay, Uruguay.

The tripthong is added to two others related to questions of pronunciation, stress and hyphenation:

• Diphthong. It arises when two different vowels that are pronounced together coincide in succession in the same syllable. For example: cave.
• Hiatus. It arises when an open vowel is combined with and a closed or two open vowels, and that sound unit ceases to exist. For example: village.
