The infinitive verbsare those that are presented in a sentence in an unconjugated form, that is, without referring to a certain tense or verb mode. They describe the basic action without conjugation. For example:jumpedarhaveer, sleepgo.
The infinitive is, then, the grammatical form that gives the verb its name, and all the infinitives in Spanish are located, according to their ending, in one of these three groups:
- Verbs ending in -ar. For example: jumpedar, cantar, shinedar.
- Verbs ending in -er: For example:correr, vender, it happeneder.
- Verbs ending in -ir. For example:Saltgo, finggo, sleepgo.
The verbal conjugation models established by convention correspond to the infinitives love, fear and leave. These three adhere to a fixed conjugation scheme that is always the same, they are called regular verbs. There are also irregular verbs, which deviate from those fixed schemes. For example: squeeze, miss, be born, acquire.
Infinitive functions
The functions of infinitive verbs in sentences are very varied, since they are the same as the functions of a noun: they can act as a subject, as a complement to the verb or as a modifier of a noun, an adjective or an adverb. For example: Travel it's part of the holidays. In this example the infinitive "travel" functions as the core of the subject of the sentence.
As a direct object of verbs it is seen quite frequently. For example: My son needs eat five times a day.
Some verbs in the infinitive have been nominalized, that is, they have acquired the value of independent nouns; such is the case of infinitives Sunrise or power. For example: East Sunrise it is wonderful. / The fight for him power it is always ruthless.
