The subject of a sentence is one that exercises the action represented by the verb. For example: People screamed. (people = subject)

There are different ways to classify the subject. One of them is according to whether or not it is expressed in the sentence. According to this criterion, the subject can be:

• Express subject. The subject is explicitly written in the sentence. The core of the subject can be a common noun, a proper noun, or a pronoun. For example: Pablo He lives in London. / Window it opened.
• Tacit subject. The subject does not appear explicitly in the sentence but is understood thanks to the form of the verb. For example: You achieved your mission. (unspoken subject = you) / We have arrived on time. (unspoken subject = we)

Other ways to classify the subject

• Active passive. The active subject (or agent) is the one who performs the action. For example: Wake he rebuked Joaquín. The taxpayer (or patient) is on whom the action is carried out. For example: Joaquin He was accused by Estela.
• Simple / compound. The simple subject is the one with a single nucleus. For example: The tree continues to grow. The compound subject is the one with more than one nucleus. For example: Shrubs and trees grow rapidly.
