The wordcouplet, of Latin origin, derived fromcopulation which means union, bond or link. It is used to refer to a metric structure of free verses, that is, it is composed of four verses with a rhyme.
The couplets can rhyme between even lines or between lines 1, 2 and 4 (it is not necessary that all four lines rhyme). On the other hand, the rhyme can be consonant (the ending of the rhyme coincides both in the vowels and in the consonants) or assonance (only the final vowels of the words coincide).
