The semicolon (;) is a punctuation mark that serves to separate different but associated ideas in the same sentence. It is used to mark a separation greater than that marked by a comma but less than that marked by a period.

Like all punctuation marks, the semicolon is used in the written language to structure sentences, order ideas and rank them, as well as to eliminate ambiguities in meaning.

How is this written? Like most punctuation marks, it is written immediately after the previous word, without a blank space, and is separated from the next word by a space. The next word starts with a lowercase letter (except for proper names)

How do you read? When reading a semicolon, a pause is marked with a comma but less than a period.

What are the semicolons used for?

To separate enums. Like the comma, the semicolon can separate elements in an enum, especially when dealing with complex constructs. For example: Buy chocolate, cream and strawberries for the cake; ham, bread and cheese for sandwiches; coffee, tea and milk for breakfast.
To separate consecutive propositions. The second part of the statement is a consequence of the first. For example: Triggered the alarm; the noise deafened everyone present.
To separate explanatory propositions. The second part of the statement explains the first. For example: They did not find him in his maternal home; he had moved years ago.
To separate parallel statements. Point out two parallel situations. For example: When I was a girl, cell phones didn't exist; now they are an object of worship.
