Grave words are those that are accented (with or without accents) on the second to last syllable. They are also called llanas or proxitones. For example: gaveto, rocor.

Syllables that are pronounced louder than others in a word are called stressed syllables. Almost all words in Spanish have a single stressed syllable. The other syllables are called unstressed. In other words, serious words are those whose stressed syllable is the second to last.

The hiatus It is the union of two vowels that belong to different syllables. It is a phonological construction, so even if there is an H between the vowels, it is also considered hiatus. For example: buho.

The hiatuses can be formed by:

  • Two open vowels. They have an accent depending on the rules of accentuation. For example:cre-eme, he-ro-e, le-o.
  • Two closed vowels. They carry a tilde depending on the rules of accentuation. For example: al-co-hol, co-o-pe-ra-ron.
  • An open vowel and a closed vowel. They always have an accent. For example: laugh, pa-ís, pu-a.

When are serious words marked?

To know which serious words must have an accent, we must follow a rule:

  • If the grave word ends in n, s or vowel, it does not have an accent. For example: they sang, way, luck.
  • If the serious word ends in another letter, it has an accent. For example: lawn, dollar.

However, the hiatuses formed by an open vowel (a, e, o) and a closed vowel (i, u) always carry an accent.
