The diphthong, the triphthong and the hiatus are sound chains that contain the same or different vowels and that, according to the spelling rules of Spanish, must meet certain stress requirements.
Diphthong
The diphthong is the sound chain in which a pair of different vowels join in the same syllable.
The diphthong can be made up of:
- closed vowel (i, u) + closed vowel (i, u).
For example: juicio, cuidice. - closed vowel (i, u) unstressed and an open tonic (a, e, o).
For example: aceiyou, novia.
There are some additional considerations regarding the diphthong, such as that the letter Y will occasionally form a conjunction of this type, or that the letter H when it does not produce a sound will not prevent one of them from forming. For example: therelar.

Tripthong
Tripthong occurs when there are three vowels in the same syllable.
- Triphthong: closed vowel (i, u) unstressed + open vowel (a, e, o) stressed + closed vowel (i, u) unstressed. For example: ac - tuis, buey.
Triphthongs are less frequent and many of them occur in conjugations of the second person (you), to the extent that the vowels "iái" are combined on many occasions.

The hiatus
The hiatus (also called "adiphthong") occurs when the tonic characteristics of a word or the pronunciation force to separate a diphthong or tripthong into different syllables.
The hiatus can be:
- Vocalic: open vowel (a, e, o) + open vowel (a, e, o).
For example: cto – andr, por – and - ma.
- Accentual. open vowel (a, e, o) unstressed + closed vowel (i, u) stressed.
For example: frand – ír, san - dí – to.
The hiatus is very frequent in the Spanish language: all the conjugated verbs in the conditional tense (runí – to) and in some of the past imperfect (Saltí – to) are examples of this.
As in the other cases, it is worth saying that the presence of the letter H between the vowels does not break the hiatus but rather maintains it. Here is a list of examples of words with hiatus.
