How is the hiatus formed?

To understand the hiatus, the diphthong and the tripthong, it is necessary to know that the vowels are distinguished into strong or open (a, e, o) and weak or closed (i, u).

There are three ways to form a hiatus:

• Strong vowel + distinct strong vowel. For example: theater (tea–to-tro)
• Strong vowel + weak stressed vowel. For example: geography (geo-gra-fy–to)
• Vowel + same vowel. For example: believe (crand–andr)

Other vowel combinations

• Diphthong. It arises from the union of a weak vowel (i, u) with a strong tonic vowel (a, e, o). For example:Hit (a-cer-to)
• Triphthong. They enclose a strong tonic vowel between two weak ones. For example: You despise (you despise)
