Adjectives are words that accompany a noun and modify it in some way. When we talk about positive adjectives, we can be referring to two concepts:
- On the one hand, the positive degree of the adjective is called the degree that expresses the quality of the noun itself, without comparing it with another (unlike the comparative or superlative degree of the adjective).
- On the other hand, positive adjectives are those that provide pleasant, positive or accepted information regarding the noun.
Degrees of adjectives
Within the qualifying adjectives you can find different degrees:
- Positive qualifying adjectives. They express the quality of the noun, without comparing it with another. For example: This car is new.
- Comparative qualifying adjectives. They compare one noun with another. For example: This car is newer than that other.
- Superlative qualifying adjectives. They express the highest degree of qualification towards a noun. For example: This car is brand new.
- It can serve you: Comparative and superlative adjectives
Positive and negative adjectives
Depending on the intention of the adjective to highlight qualities or defects, adjectives can be classified as positive or negative.
- Negative adjectives. They highlight unpleasant, negative or pejorative characteristics. For example: ugly, weak, liar, outrageous.
- Positive adjectives. They highlight pleasant, positive and socially accepted characteristics. For example: cute, strong, sincere, reliable.
- It can help you: Positive and negative qualifying adjectives
(!) Ambiguity of positive adjectives
Although it is possible to recognize many of the positive qualifying adjectives with the naked eye, many times it will be essential to take the context into account in order to determine whether an adjective within a sentence is being used as a positive or negative adjective. For example: Analía is a woman excessively meticulous.
Although in this sentence adjectives can be used as positive, it is essential to take into account the context and intonation since it could, for example, be a criticism or an ironic phrase.
