Days of the month

The days of the month in English are ordinal, that is first (First), second (second) third (third), etc.

That is why in English you never write only the day but also the ending of the cardinal.

1st: First / First

2nd. Second / second

3rd: Third / Third

4th: Forth / Fourth

From day 4 onwards the termination is th: 5th, 10th, 28th.

Dates ending in 1, 2 and 3 over 20 will have the corresponding endings.

For example:

21st: twenty first.

23rd: twenty third.

The years

Until 1999 Years are told by dividing the number into the first two numbers and the last two numbers.

For example:

1981: nineteen eighty one / nineteen eighty-one.

From the year 2000 they are said complete:

For example:

2005: two thousand and five.

Differences between American English and British English

In British English they are written in various ways, but mainly in two different ways:

Day + of + month + year

Example: 1st of July 1983.

However, the "of" can also be removed.

Month + day in cardinal number +, + year

July 1, 1983.

This format is used in written language.

In American English they are written:

Month +, + day +, + year

July, 1st, 1983

They say:

Month + the + day +, + year

July the first, 1983.
