A noun is a word that designates fixed entities, that is, animate beings, inanimate beings or concepts.
Depending on which is the referent of the noun, there are:
- Individual nouns. They refer to individual things, objects or beings. For example: field, bee, house, island.
- Collective nouns. They refer to a group of elements. For example: herd, team, forest, teeth
Not just any group of elements is a collective noun. For example, if we say “children” we are talking about a group, but the word is plural. Collective nouns are those that designate a group of elements or individuals without being plural words.
