The cardinal adjectives They are a type of numeral adjectives that express quantity, that is, they are scalar numbers. When they are mentioned, the receiver knows how many are the nouns that are being spoken. For example: four, two, one hundred.

In general, adjectives express characteristics related to subjective descriptions of the noun they modify; cardinal adjectives provide an exact piece of information: quantity. For example: Three lemons were left over.

Characteristics of cardinal adjectives

Cardinal adjectives have a characteristic that they do not share with any other class of adjectives. In the Spanish language, the agreement in terms of gender and number is made between the verb and the noun, and then from the modifiers of each of them.

However, when it comes to cardinal adjectives, the issue is modified and it is the adjectives that force the noun (and the verb) to be modified in terms of number. If the adjective comes to modify the question of quantity, it will be the one who determines the number of the sentence. Therefore, they will always precede the noun. For example: Ten people came.

Numeral adjectives

Numeral adjectives are those that provide information about the quantity or distribution of the noun: they are characterized by expressing a numerical quantity in their name.

Numeral adjectives can be cardinal (when they express quantity), ordinal (when they express order), multiples (when they express multiplicity) or partitive (when they express partition).
