The compound subject is one that has more than one nucleus. The core of the subject is a noun or a pronoun. For example: The dog and the cat they play outside. / Martin and his woman they go on vacation.

The compound subject is distinguished from the simple subject, which has a single nucleus. For example: The dog sleeps outside.

Characteristics of the composite subject

Nuclei in the plural do not indicate that it is a composite subject: there must be two nuclei for the subject to be composite. For example: The children they are asleep. (Simple subject) / The children and its parents they are asleep. (Composite subject)

The nuclei of the composite subject are related through a nexus. For example: My sister Y my mother do not speak.

The compound subject cannot be tacit: it is always an express subject. Also, it is usually before the predicate and not after.

Some subject modifiers are:

• Direct modifier. It occurs before or after the nucleus, attached to it, and must agree with it in gender and number. It can be an adjective or article. For example: The book new it is very entertaining.
• Indirect modifier. It is made up of a preposition (or nexus) and a group of words (syntagm). It serves to clarify the nature or state of the nucleus. For example: The song from Justin Beiber it is a success.
• Apposition. A word or a group of words enclosed in commas that represent the same meaning as the kernel, that is, syntactically could replace it. For example: Carlos, my boss, retires at the end of the year.
