The saws They are a mountainous subset within another set of mountains or mountain system (for example: The Andes mountain range)
Its shape is serrated or broken and is longer than wide and, within them, massifs can be distinguished: mountains that rise in a singular way and stand out from the rest of the mountain ranges. It also receives other names: serranía, serrasuelo, sierra grande, sawmill and serrano.
Difference between sierra and cordillera
Many times the definition of sierra is confused with that of mountain range. The main difference is that the mountain range is a mountain range, its height is higher than the mountain ranges and, generally, it has folds that twist and shape it. Within a mountain range there may be mountain ranges.
Weather
Although the climate of the mountains will depend on the type of location with respect to the tropics, in general terms it can be said that they have a warm or temperate climate depending on the time of year. This climate can become semi-arid.
These are usually areas with moderate winds and, at times (depending on the season of the year), there can be strong winds. Precipitations are usually scarce due to the mountain range that generally surrounds them, which prevents the rains from arriving in massive form.
Flora and fauna
The mountains can have abundant amounts of low vegetation (shrubs) or trees of medium height, although they can also be arid areas with little or even no vegetation.
In relation to the fauna, medium-sized herbivorous animals and some small-sized carnivores such as foxes, hares, vicuñas, guanacos and alpacas inhabit the mountains. It is also possible to find large predatory animals such as the puma, tiger or wild cat.
Presence of man
The mountains are places generally inhabited by man since they present a certain plant and animal wealth that allows, together with the climate, to settle in the area.
