Therelative sentences They are those subordinate structures that are inserted in the sentence introduced by a relative pronoun. For example: The trip you promised me never happened.

They are also called adjectival subordinate clauses because they fulfill the function of adjective, since they modify the noun that is as antecedent. They are not actually sentences, but propositions subordinate to a main sentence, within a compound sentence.

There are two kinds of relative clauses:

  • Specific. They restrict or narrow the scope of the antecedent and are not enclosed in commas. For example: I didn't like the movie that was released yesterday.
  • Explanatory. They do not restrict the scope but make a clarification or explain something and are written between commas. For example: My sister, who I work with, is very professional.

The pronouns that introduce the relative sentences are the following: what, where, when, how much, how, who, which Y whose. These last three with their corresponding variations in number or gender and number. Several of these pronouns can head the relative clause associated with a preposition, such as in, to, to or from with. For example: The man I fell in love with lives in Uruguay.

Relative sentences are widely used in everyday life, since it is common that we need to make clarifications or specifications about what we are saying and by using these structures we avoid having to repeat several words.
