In English, gerunds are those verbs that end in "-ing" and can appear in sentences fulfilling different functions.

Some of the functions that gerunds have are the following:

As an adjective: Gerunds of this type are those used to add some data or substantive description of the sentence, and it is always placed before this. For example: “The crying boy is my brother ”or“ He is in the waiting room "or" The swimming pool is over there ".

As an informative complement to another verb: there are some verbs that need to be accompanied by others so that their meaning is fully understood, as in the following case: “I hate playing the violin ".

As a subject: in this case, the verb ending in –ing is nothing more than the subject of the sentence, such as: “Singing is very difficult for me "or"Brushing your teeth well is very imporant ”.

As a verb tense: gerunds are used in the following tenses:

  1. Future continuous: He will be studying.
  2. Perfect continuous conditional: They would been cleaning.
  3. Present continuous: I'm trying to sleep.
  4. Continuous conditional: He would be crying.
  5. Past continuous: I was reading my new book.
