The indicative mood expresses as real the verb that it enunciates. Furthermore, the actions it expresses are always concrete, making it one of the most used in the Spanish language. For example: We arrived in Paris.

The indicative mood states actions that have occurred (past), that occur, while, that will most likely occur (future).

There are three modes:

  • Indicative mode. It is used to give information. The verb tenses of the indicative mood are: simple past perfect (ate); conditionalwould eat); Simple future (will eat); composite futurewill have eaten); past imperfectI used to eat); past perfectI had eaten) and present (eat).
  • Subjunctive mode. It is used to express hypothetical or possible assumptions, wishes, requests, actions. The tenses of the subjunctive mood are: future (you eat); past imperfectwe would eat) or present (the coma).
  • Imperative mode. It is used to give advice, orders or to formulate an order. There are no verb tenses within this mode, and it can only be applied to the second person. For example: eat, eat.

Verb tenses in the indicative mood

  • Simple future of the indicative mood. It expresses an action that has not yet occurred, but most likely will happen in the future. For example: Damien will come tomorrow to have a snack at home.
