Grave words (or flat words) are those whose stressed syllable is the penultimate. We call the stressed syllable the syllable that sounds the strongest within the word. For example: Italia, Argenyouna, itpaña.

When are serious words marked?

  • They have a tilde when they do not end in N, S, or vowel. For example: Yournez.
  • They do not have an accent when they end in N, S or vowel. For example: Colombia.

(!) Exception. When they present a hiatus, serious words carry an accent, even if they end in N, S or vowel. For example: Hunyelledto.

The other types of words, according to their accentuation, are acute (stressed on the last syllable), esdrújulas (stressed on the third to last syllable) and sobreesdrújulas (stressed on the syllable before the third to last syllable).
