The animal nouns are common nouns that designate different species of animals. For example: duck, horse, pig.
Like all common nouns, they are written in lowercase. However, if a species is named with its technical name, they are usually capitalized and italicized, as they are terms in another language. For example: Orcinus orca (the best known species of killer whales). Your proper name will be capitalized (Orcius) while the common noun (orca) will always be written with a lower case.
