The imperative mode it is one of the three ways of conjugating verbs. The imperative is used to express wishes, orders, advice or requests. For example: Come on with me.

This mode does not have conjugations in different verb tenses because it is formulated at the enunciation time (while the order is being given). Furthermore, imperative verbs cannot be formulated in the first person since you cannot formulate orders towards yourself.

Verbs in the imperative can be formulated in two ways:

  • Positive imperative. Express an order. For example: listen, look, read.
  • Negative imperative. It expresses a prohibition. For example: don't listen, don't look, don't read.
