Types of conjunctions
Conjunctions can be separated into two large groups:
- Coordinators. They join sentences or words that are of the same syntactic category, without establishing an order of importance between them. Within the coordinating conjunctions the following types are identified:
- Tradeoffs. They express the alternation between the joined options: o, u. They may be inclusive, if both options can be valid. For example: Do you know france or Spain? or they can be excluding, if they determine a choice between the elements. For example: Do you want tea or coffee?
- Copulatives. They express the sum or accumulation of homogeneous elements: y, e, ni. For example: I went to have tea with Lucia Y Juan.
- Distributive. They are used to express alternation. For example: ya-ya; Ora Ora; well well; be-be.
- Adverse. They oppose two propositions for one to correct the other: although, but, more, however, but, nevertheless.
- Subordinates. They determine a hierarchical order between the sentences or words that they join. The elements that join are of different syntactic category and one is subordinate to the other. They may be:
- Causal. They convey the motive or cause of the statement in the main sentence: since, since, because. For example: I did not go to the party why I was sick.
- Conditionals. They express a condition for what is said in the main sentence to be fulfilled: provided, unless, yes, provided. For example: I will invite you provided that help me organize.
- Comparisons. They make a comparison between two sentences: more than, just like, like, like. For example: This exam was more difficult what previous.
- Consecutive. They express the consequences that exist between one proposition and another: So, so, so, later. For example: I did not feel well, so I went to bed.
- Concessive. They express difficulty, although it does not mean that the main proposition is not fulfilled: even though, even though, even though. For example: I won't buy you a toy by more than make a fuss.
- Temporary. They express a temporal link between the prepositions: before, after, while, when, hardly, as. For example: Call the police barely I heard the call for help.
- Finals. They are used to express the objective or purpose of what is said in the main sentence: so that, so that. For example: I cleaned the kitchen counter, in order to you can knead there.
