The prayers they are the smallest syntactic units used in a language. Every sentence must always begin with a capital letter and end with a period.

Each sentence consists of two central parts: a subject (who performs the action) and a predicate (the action).

There are many ways to classify sentences. According to the number of propositions or suborations (each one with its subject and predicate) they are distinguished between simple (they have a single predicate and, therefore, a single subject) or compound (they have more than one predicate and, therefore, more than a subject).

Simple sentences

A sentence is simple when all the verbs in the sentence (be it one or more) refer to the same subject. For example: Juan runs a lot. / Juan and Martín run a lot. / Juan runs and jumps.

To define if a sentence is simple, we can ask ourselves the following questions:

Who is doing the action? This is the question that must be asked to recognize the subject (noun) of the sentence.

What is (or does) the subject? By answering this question we will be able to recognize the action, that is, the verb of the sentence and thus identify the predicate.

For example: Maria went to my house.

Who went to my house? Maria (subject)
What did Maria do? Went to my house (predicate)

Simple sentences can have:

  • Simple subject. For example: Maria dances very well. (it's simple because it has only one core: "Maria")
  • Composite subject. For example: Mary and Juana they dance very well. (It is composed because it has more than one verbal nucleus: "María" and "Juana")
  • Tacit subject. For example: Dances very well. (It is tacit because it is not explicit but it is understood that it speaks of him, her or you)
  • Compound predicate. For example: Maria dance Y sings very well. (It is composed because it has two verbal nuclei: "dance" and "sing")
  • Simple predicate. For example: Maria dance very well. (it's simple because it has only one verbal nucleus: "dance")

Compound sentences

Compound sentences are those that have more than one verb conjugated to different subjects. For example: My friend was late and her parents got mad.

Suborations, also called propositions, have syntactic coherence in themselves: (My friend was late) (her parents got mad).

Each of the two verbs refers to different subjects ("came" is the verb that refers to "my friend" and "angry" is the verb that refers to "their parents." To join one proposition with another, links or links are used connectors ("and", in this case).

Compound sentences can be:

  • Coordinated. The two propositions have the same hierarchy. For example: They sing and I listen to them carefully.
  • Subordinate. A proposition is subordinate to another main proposition. For example:Juan plays the guitar that I gave him.
