The term syllable refers to the set of phonemes that are pronounced in a single blow of voice. This means that they can be defined as the phonological division of any word. The syllables make up thephonic core.
There are two types of syllables:
- Stressed syllables. They are those in which the accent falls and that, therefore, are pronounced with greater force.
- Unstressed syllables.Opposite to the tonic, and known as "soft", they are those that lack an accent, so they are pronounced with less intensity. Both syllables, that is unstressed and stressed, are found in all words that have at least two syllables.
Depending on the location of the stressed syllable, the words are classified into:
- Sharp: The stressed syllable is the last. They have an accent if the word ends in N, S or vowel.
- Serious: The stressed syllable is the penultimate. They carry an accent when the word does not end in N, S or vowel.
- Esdrújulas: The stressed syllable is the penultimate. They always have an accent.
- Sobreesdrújulas. The stressed syllable is the one before the one before the penultimate.
